Delamere Forest is Cheshire's largest area of woodland, and on a cold morning it's one of the best reasons to get out of the house. If you're planning a walk there, here's what's actually worth doing — and why the coffee waiting for you back in Weaverham, six miles down the road, is worth the drive home for.
Two walks worth doing
The Old Pale Trail is the short option at 3km (1.9 miles), but don't let the length fool you — it climbs to the Old Pale, the highest point in Cheshire, where a small stone circle marks a 270-degree viewpoint. On a clear day you can pick out the Pennines, Manchester, the Mersey estuary, Liverpool's skyline, the Wirral, the Dee Estuary and the Welsh hills, all from one spot. It's a genuinely good payoff for a short walk, and there's a wildflower meadow near the top that's worth slowing down for in spring and summer.
The Blakemere Trail is longer at 5.8km (3.6 miles) and loops around Blakemere Moss, a lake that was reflooded in the 1990s after being drained for farmland over a century earlier. The paths are mostly dry sandstone underfoot, the tree cover is mature, and it's a genuinely good spot for birdwatching if you bring binoculars. It feels a lot further from Cheshire than it is.
If you've got more energy — or kids who need tiring out — Go Ape runs a treetop adventure course through the forest with ziplines, tightropes and rope bridges, and it's one of the more popular reasons people make the trip out from Chester, Northwich and Warrington.
What's already there
Forestry England's visitor centre has its own café with indoor and outdoor seating, plus proper toilets and family facilities — so you're not stuck if you forget a flask. We're not trying to compete with that; it's a good stop after a long walk. What we'd suggest instead is bringing a flask of something better than instant for the walk itself, and treating the drive home as the reason to make a proper cup.
