Northwich doesn't always get credit for its food and drink scene, sitting as it does in the shadow of Chester and Manchester. But the town has a genuinely good spread of independent cafés, and it's worth knowing what's there — whether you're visiting for the day or you live a few streets from Witton Street and never quite get round to trying them.
Independent cafés worth knowing about
ABDA – Coffee, Cake, Culture is one of the town's better-known independents, built specifically around coffee and cake rather than treating them as an afterthought to a wider menu. Eleven.northwich is a family-owned café doing breakfast, brunch, cakes, milkshakes and smoothies — the kind of place that works whether you're stopping for ten minutes or staying for an hour. Charlies Café on Witton Street is a family-run spot serving hot food, homemade soups, salads and fresh cakes, and has the feel of a proper local rather than a chain trying to look independent.
If you've got kids in tow, or just fancy something different, Board Beans Café combines food and drink with a library of around 350 board games — a genuinely useful option on a wet Cheshire afternoon. Bear is dog- and child-friendly during the day, with a broad menu that goes beyond the usual café standards.
Beyond the cafés
Northwich's independent scene isn't limited to coffee shops. The town sits on the River Weaver, home to the historic Lion Salt Works, and Witton Street and the market area have become a focal point for smaller, independent bars and restaurants rather than national chains — worth a wander if you're in town for more than a coffee.
