Frodsham and Helsby Hill Walks: Routes, Parking and Views

TL;DR

Frodsham Hill and Helsby Hill give you some of the best views in Cheshire for very little effort. Walk one hill in an hour, or link both on a 6 mile loop, and pack a flask of fresh coffee for the summit.

Frodsham and Helsby Hill walks: a bag of Colombia Planadas coffee to fill a flask for the walk

Frodsham and Helsby sit at the north end of the Sandstone Ridge, just up the road from our roastery. Their red sandstone cliffs look out over the Mersey estuary. Here is how to walk them, where to park and where to grab a coffee after.

What you'll get from this
  • Three walks, from a short summit stroll to a full loop of both hills
  • Where to park, and which train stations to use
  • What to look out for, from the war memorial to the Old Man of Helsby
  • Where to find coffee and food in Frodsham
  • How to make better flask coffee for a hill walk

Are Frodsham and Helsby Hills Worth Walking? Yes, for the Views Alone

Yes. Both hills are short climbs with big rewards. On a clear day you can see Liverpool, the Mersey estuary and the hills of North Wales.

Frodsham Hill rises to about 152 metres, or just over 500 feet. Helsby Hill reaches 141 metres. Neither is a mountain, but both rise steeply from flat land, so the views feel huge.

They also mark the start of the Sandstone Trail. This long distance path runs 55 kilometres, or 34 miles, from Frodsham to Whitchurch in Shropshire.

Frodsham Hill: 4 Things to See

Frodsham Hill is also known as Overton Hill or Beacon Hill. Locals tend to call it Frodsham Hill.

1. The war memorial

A tall sandstone obelisk stands on the summit. It is about 11 metres high and is Grade II listed.

It names 105 people from Frodsham who died in the First World War and 34 from the Second. It is a quiet place to pause and remember.

2. Mersey View

The viewpoint near the memorial looks out across the estuary. You can pick out the Manchester Ship Canal and the Weaver Navigation.

Look further and you may spot Liverpool John Lennon Airport and the city's two cathedrals. Bring binoculars if you have them.

3. Jacob's Ladder

Jacob's Ladder is a flight of steps cut into the cliff in Victorian times. It drops down into a wooded valley called Dunsdale Hollow. The old steps are worn, so newer steps now run alongside them.

4. Snidley Moor and Woodhouse Hill

The Woodland Trust looks after these woods next to Frodsham Hill. They cover about 14 hectares. Look out for the bank of an Iron Age hill fort on Woodhouse Hill, plus old quarries and caves.

See Frodsham Hill before you go

This short video follows a walk on Frodsham Hill and the Sandstone Trail. It gives you a feel for the paths and the views.

Helsby Hill: 3 Things to See

Helsby Hill is the steep red cliff you see from the M56. Much of it is owned by the National Trust.

1. The Iron Age hill fort

The summit holds a hill fort with double ramparts. It dates from roughly 800 to 400 BC and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stand on the top and you can see why people chose it.

2. The Old Man of Helsby

Look at the cliff from below, or from the train, and you may see a face in the rock. Locals call it the Old Man of Helsby.

3. The trig point and the crags

An Ordnance Survey trig point marks the top. The sandstone crags below are popular with climbers, so you may see ropes on a dry day. Keep well back from the cliff edge, especially with children and dogs.

3 Frodsham and Helsby Walks to Try

Pick a walk to suit your time and legs. All three use paths that can be muddy after rain, so wear proper boots.

Walk 1: Frodsham Hill summit stroll, about 1 hour

Park at the Frodsham Hill car park on Bellemonte Road. Walk to the war memorial and Mersey View, then loop through the woods.

It is short, mostly gentle and perfect for a flask stop with a view.

Walk 2: Helsby Hill from Helsby Quarry, about 1 to 2 hours

Park at Helsby Quarry car park on Alvanley Road. The hill is signed from there, and the summit is about a 10 minute climb.

The Ramblers publish a 4.5 mile loop from this car park. It takes in Helsby Hill and the woods to the south, and takes around 3 hours.

Walk 3: Both hills on a 6 mile loop, about 3 to 4 hours

This is the classic. The walk from Frodsham goes over Beacon Hill, through Dunsdale and Tong Dean, and up to Helsby Hill.

It returns along the Longster Trail and the Sandstone Trail, then crosses Snidley Moor and Woodhouse Hill back to Frodsham. Expect about 6.25 miles, or 10 kilometres, with around 380 metres of climbing.

Go4aWalk rates this route as moderate. Use their route card or an OS map for the turns.

How to Make Better Flask Coffee for a Hill Walk

Flask coffee does not have to taste stewed. A few simple steps make a real difference at the top.

  1. Warm the flask. Fill it with boiling water for five minutes, then tip it out.
  2. Brew it a little strong. Use about 18g of coffee per 250ml of water in a cafetière.
  3. Do not stew it. Press after four minutes and pour straight into the flask.
  4. Carry milk separately. A small bottle of cold milk keeps the coffee tasting fresher.
  5. Use fresh beans. Coffee roasted within the last few weeks keeps more flavour through the morning.

A balanced coffee like Colombia Planadas holds up well in a flask. It is grown by 1,325 small organic farmers in South Tolima.
