Tatton Park sits right on the edge of Knutsford, a short drive from our roastery. It is one of the best days out in Cheshire, whatever the weather. Here is how to plan yours, flask in hand.

What you'll get from this
  • What it costs to visit Tatton Park in 2026, and how to pay less
  • The best things to see, from the deer park to the Japanese Garden
  • Opening times for autumn and winter, when things change
  • Dog rules, picnic tips and where to find coffee on site
  • A simple one day plan you can follow

Is Tatton Park Worth a Day Out?

Yes. Tatton Park packs a full day into one place. Much of it costs nothing once you are through the gate.

The estate covers around 2,000 acres, with about 1,000 acres of deer park open to visitors. Red and fallow deer roam freely. There are two large lakes, called meres, and long tree lined avenues for walking.

On top of that, you get a Georgian mansion, around 50 acres of formal gardens and a working 1930s farm. The National Trust owns the estate, and Cheshire East Council runs it.

How Much Does Tatton Park Cost in 2026?

You pay to bring a car into the parkland. Walkers and cyclists get in free.

  • Car entry until 1 November 2026: £10 on weekdays and £11 at weekends and bank holidays.
  • Car entry from 2 November 2026: £9 on weekdays and £10 at weekends.
  • Blue Badge holders: £5 on any day.

The attractions are paid for on top. In the main season, Gardens or Farm entry costs £11 for an adult. The Mansion costs £15, and a Totally Tatton ticket for all three costs £20.

National Trust members get into the Gardens and Mansion for free. Booking online saves 10% on parkland and attraction tickets. Prices can change, so check the Tatton Park website before you go.

Getting there

Tatton Park is signed from junction 19 of the M6 and junction 7 of the M56. The main entrance is through the lodge gates at the top of Knutsford town.

Coming by train? Knutsford station is about half a mile from the park entrance. Walking in also means free entry.

7 Things to See and Do at Tatton Park

  1. Walk the deer park. Wide open grassland, ancient trees and herds of red and fallow deer.
  2. Circle Tatton Mere. The larger mere is natural and great for birdwatching. Melchett Mere formed in the 1920s from subsidence.
  3. Find the Japanese Garden. Built in the 1910s, it has a tea house, a Shinto shrine and a little bridge over a stream.
  4. Explore the formal gardens. The Italian Garden, rose garden, maze and fernery are all here.
  5. Tour the Mansion. The house holds paintings by Canaletto and Van Dyck, plus fine Gillow furniture.
  6. Visit the Farm. It is kept much as it was in the 1930s, with rare breed animals.
  7. See the Old Hall. This much older manor house tells the story of the estate before the Mansion.

You will not fit everything into one visit. Pick two or three, and save the rest for another trip.

This video follows a walk from Knutsford into Tatton Park. It gives you a feel for the scale of the parkland before you go.

Tatton Park in Autumn and Winter

Autumn is a special time to visit. The beech avenues turn gold, and the deer rut begins.

The rut is when male deer compete for females. You may hear the stags roaring across the park. Tatton Park asks visitors to give the deer plenty of space, as they are wild and can act aggressively.

Opening times change in late October

Until 25 October 2026, the parkland opens 10am to 7pm every day. From 26 October, it opens 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday, and closes on Mondays.

The Gardens stay open through winter, Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 4pm. The Farm opens at weekends only, plus October half term. The Mansion closes for winter after 1 November, apart from selected Christmas dates.

Always check opening times on the day. Events and weather can change things at short notice.

A Simple One Day Plan for Tatton Park

Here is an easy day that mixes fresh air, gardens and good coffee.

  • 10am: Deer park walk. Arrive at opening, when the park is quiet. Walk towards Tatton Mere with your flask.
  • 11.30am: Coffee by the water. Find a bench, pour a cup and watch the birds on the mere.
  • 12.30pm: Lunch. Head to the Stables Restaurant in the Stableyard, or eat your own picnic.
  • 1.30pm: The Gardens. Spend an hour in the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden.
  • 3pm: The Farm or Mansion. Choose the Farm with children, or the Mansion for history.
  • 4pm: Into Knutsford. Walk out through the lodge gates for a last coffee in town.

For café ideas in town, see our coffee lover's guide to Knutsford. It covers King Street, Princess Street and a short heritage walk.

Dogs, Picnics and Practical Tips

Tatton Park is very dog friendly. Dogs are welcome in the parkland, the Farm and the Stables Restaurant, under close control.

  • From 1 May to 31 July, all dogs must be on a lead in the parkland.
  • In the Gardens, dogs need a short lead, with one dog per adult.
  • Dogs cannot swim in the meres or go into the Mansion, Old Hall or shops.

Picnics are welcome in the Gardens, but there are no bins, so take your litter home. Barbecues are not allowed anywhere on the estate.

Toilets are in the Stableyard. The Gardener's Cottage Tea Room opens on selected dates only, so do not rely on it.

How to Make the Best Flask Coffee for a Day Out

A flask of good coffee turns a cold bench into the best seat in Cheshire. A few simple steps make a big difference.

  1. Warm the flask first. Fill it with hot water for five minutes, then tip it out.
  2. Brew it a little stronger. Coffee cools and softens in a flask, so add an extra spoon.
  3. Use a cafetière or filter. Both give a clean cup that holds up well for a few hours.
  4. Keep milk separate. Carry it in a small bottle and add it when you pour.

Choose a smooth, sweet coffee that tastes good as it cools. Our Colombia Planadas has caramel sweetness and a clean finish. It is ideal for long walks.
