B Corp vs Faith-Led Coffee Brands: What Each One Promises
B Corp is an outside audit of a whole company, while faith-led values come from within and are judged by evidence. Neither guarantees fair farmer prices on its own, so ask any brand the same 7 questions.
You see a B Corp badge on one bag and a faith-led story on another. Both sound good, but they promise different things. Here is what each one really means for your coffee.

B Corp vs Faith-Led: What Is the Difference?
A B Corp is a company checked against social and environmental standards by B Lab, a non-profit. A faith-led brand is one whose values come from its founders' beliefs.
The key difference is who checks the promise. B Corp is audited from outside. Faith-led values are set from inside, so you judge them by what the brand shows you.
Neither one is automatically better. A B Corp badge tells you a company passed a test. A faith-led brand tells you why it exists. The best brands give you evidence either way.
What Does B Corp Mean? 5 Facts in Plain English
B Corp is short for Certified B Corporation. Here is what sits behind the badge.
- B Lab runs it. B Lab is a non-profit that began in 2006. B Lab UK runs the scheme here.
- It certifies the whole company. It looks at how the business treats staff, suppliers, customers, communities and the planet.
- It used to be a points test. Companies needed at least 80 points on the B Impact Assessment. An ordinary business scores around 51.
- The law changes too. UK B Corps must change their Articles of Association. Directors then have to weigh people and planet, not just shareholders.
- It costs money. From January 2027, B Lab UK's yearly fee starts at £600 for the smallest firms, plus separate audit fees.
There are now more than 3,000 B Corps in the UK, according to B Lab UK in September 2026. Worldwide, there are over 10,000.
What changed with the new B Corp standards?
B Lab published new standards in April 2025. The points score is gone. Companies must now meet set requirements across seven impact topics.
Those topics include climate action, human rights, fair work and stakeholder governance. Firms also have to show improvement at year three and year five.
Recertification under the new rules began in January 2026. New companies could certify from March 2026. B Lab also says the certification cycle is moving from three years to five.

This short film from B Lab explains the B Corp movement in its own words. It is a good starting point before you look at any badge.
What B Corp Does Not Guarantee
B Corp is a useful signal. It is not a promise about every bag of coffee a company sells.
- It is not a product label. It certifies the company, not each coffee. It does not set a price paid to farmers.
- Big companies can certify. Some parts of large groups are B Corps. That has caused debate.
- It has had critics. In 2022, some coffee groups protested when a large capsule brand was certified. A well-known brewer lost its certification the same year after staff complaints.
- Some brands have walked away. In 2025, one long-standing B Corp dropped the badge. It said the rules let big firms look greener than they are.
None of this makes B Corp bad. It means you still need to look at what a brand actually does.

Our ethics page explains how we source our coffee. No badge needed to read it, just the details.
Read Our Sourcing StoryWhat Does "Faith-Led" Mean for a Coffee Brand?
A faith-led business is shaped by its founders' beliefs. For a Christian business, that might mean honesty, generosity, care for the poor and care for creation.
There is no certificate for this. Nobody audits it. That is both its strength and its weakness.
The strength is motive. Values that come from faith often run deep, and do not depend on a fee or a score. The weakness is proof. A shopper only has the brand's word unless the brand shows its working.
How we try to show our working
Creation Coffee is a small, faith-founded roastery. Jon roasts every batch in a log cabin in Weaverham, Cheshire.
10% of our profits go to Compassion UK, a Christian child sponsorship charity. We explain exactly how in how your coffee supports Compassion UK.
We also wrote about what giving 10% looks like day to day in should a business tithe. You can read who we are on our Christian coffee roaster UK page.
B Corp vs Fairtrade vs Rainforest Alliance: 3 Different Jobs
People often mix these up. They do different jobs.
- B Corp checks the whole company. It covers staff, governance, environment and community.
- Fairtrade certifies the product. It sets a minimum price and a premium for farmers. From 1 December 2026, the minimum for washed Arabica rises to US$2.00 a pound, plus a US$0.20 premium.
- Rainforest Alliance also certifies the product. Its seal means the coffee was grown to its standard, checked by independent auditors.
A faith-led brand may hold none, one or all of these. Many small roasters buy direct trade coffee instead, which has no single label at all.
We compare the two main sourcing models in direct trade vs Fairtrade coffee. For what the word "ethical" should mean, read what is ethical coffee.
Do Shoppers Actually Care About Badges?
Many do. A survey for B Lab UK of 1,791 UK adults found 63% use certifications to decide who to buy from. That was up from 56% in 2022.
The same survey found 51% had heard of B Corp. But only 47% of those knew it covers social issues as well as the environment.
B Lab UK paid for that survey, so treat it with care. Still, it shows two things. People want proof, and many are not sure what the labels mean.
How to Check Any Coffee Brand: 7 Questions
Whether a brand is B Corp, faith-led, both or neither, these questions cut through the noise.
- Can you name the farm or co-op? Look for a region, a producer group or a farmer's name.
- Do they say what they pay? Good brands share prices or explain how they set them.
- Is the giving specific? "10% of profits to a named charity" beats "we give back".
- Is the B Corp listing real? Search the company on the official B Corp directory.
- Do they publish an impact report? Even a short one shows they keep track.
- Is the coffee fresh? A printed roast date shows care in the details too.
- Do their words match their actions? Faith or values claims should show up in how they treat people.

An example from our shelf
Our Brazil Eagle Carmelo comes through the Café Delas programme. It is sourced from women farmers, and the lot names two producers, Jaqueline Borges and Jordana Tacila Almeida Conti.
That is the kind of detail to look for. It tells you who grew the coffee, not just which country it came from.
So Which Should You Choose?
Choose the brand that gives you the clearest evidence. A badge helps. A clear story helps. Both together are even better.
If shared values matter to you, a faith-led roaster may feel like home. If you want an outside audit, look for B Corp. Either way, ask the seven questions above.
The aim is simple. Your money should do good at both ends of the cup.
